we can rerender that 4 u, wholesale is a meditation on generational knowledge, memory, and the evolution of physical labour into digital skill. It’s also a tribute to my dad. The title of the work is a play on Philip K. Dick’s 1966 short story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, cementing the theme of memory and referencing the many applications of the word render.
My dad taught me how to render plaster, and for a long time this was the only usage of that word I knew. Now it’s become part of my digital vernacular, and a symbol of our ever pressing move from a physical world into virtual ones.
The video is compirsed of fly throughs of lo-fi environments inspired by Total Recall - the 90s adaption of Dick’s story - and littered with nods to personal nostalgia. Chunky TVS and IRL footage filmed in my hometown evoke wistful thoughts of the early 2000s, while subtitles recount the father daughter information transfer.
Created for STREAM (2019), a night of artist video, and shown as part of Warehouse Party #002.
